Monterrey to Bodega Bay

Since we arrived in Monterrey after dark we got up and went into Cannery Row to grab a coffee and see a little of the town. It was about a 4 hour drive to Bodega Bay, we left about 10am and arrived about 6pm. Not too bad considering the day before ☺️.

As we drove around Monterrey bay we came to Santa Cruz, we stopped in at the Natural Bridges State Beach for a quick photo at the view point.

Our next stop was Shark Fin rock, there was no signage and google was a little off on the location so we drove right on by and had to turn around. All you see from the highway is a few cars parked in a pseudo parking area in front of a small embankment, we’ve often seen similar cars parked on the side of the road and wonder..”what are they doing there?”. It’s probably something special if it seems to be nothing but people are there, why not stop the next time? There was a path down the hillside to the beach, if we had more time it would have been a great beach day.

Abandoned rail road on the top of the embankment separating the highway from the ocean.
We were surprised how much it actually looked like a sharks fin. Notice the natural bridge to the left, you can just see the light shining through.

About a half hour further was our next site seeing stop, the Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park. Our (or I, not sure if Chris is as infatuated) interest in lighthouses started on the east coast and we began seeking them out on the rest of our travels. The housing on site is now used as a hostel. We aren’t really the hostel type 😜, but it might be interesting to use this as an overnight stop. Some more info here – https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=533.

About a half hour down the highway was Devils slide, with some sort of abandoned structure…not sure why there are people sitting on top of it.

Another half hour down the highway we skirted around the edge of San Francisco and drove across the Golden Gate Bridge. We had made the decision not to stop as we’ve been before and time was of the essence to get back in Canada before we overstayed in the US.

We arrived at the Bodega Bay Lodge for sunset, definitely recommend it if you find yourself on the PCH.
